The PSL's Worst: Chiefs' Leaky Defence...

Kaizer Chiefs are enduring a challenging start to the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season, having conceded 12 goals — the most by any team in the league — and failing to keep a clean sheet. This defensive struggle has raised concerns, with many questioning whether the club should be worried or if this is simply part of a rebuilding phase under new head coach Nasreddine Nabi.

Official statistics show that Chiefs concede an average of 1.5 goals per match. A worrying statistic is the fact that their keepers make the least amount of saves in the league with 1.3 per match.

Despite the disappointing statistics, Nabi remains confident in his approach, emphasizing that the team is in the midst of a long-term development process. He believes that the defensive frailties are part of growing pains as the squad adjusts to his tactical demands.

The Tunisian coach remains focused on building a possession-based style of play and improving team cohesion, which he believes will lead to success over time. While results are crucial in the competitive environment of the PSL, Nabi's faith in the process and the players' ability to adapt is unwavering.

Although Chiefs' current form has led to dropped points, there have been flashes of promise in attack. However, the defensive issues remain a significant concern. The squad could look to strengthen in key areas, particularly in central defensive and goalkeeper positions, if they are to turn things around.

Ultimately, while Chiefs' defensive struggles are hard to ignore, the club is still in a rebuilding phase. Nabi's calm and patient approach is guiding them through this period of adjustment. If the team continues to develop and the right adjustments are made, there is hope for improvement. For now, faith and patience are essential as the club looks to find its footing under new leadership.
