The coach Pitso Mosimane succeeded at Al Ahly has made a big admission over his departure from the club in 2020.

After collecting two trophies in just over a year as head coach of the Egyptian giants, Swiss manager Rene Weiler departed the club during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He was succeeded in the job by former Mamelodi Sundowns manager Pitso Mosimane, who would go on to win an impressive five trophies, including two CAF Champions League titles, in less than two years.

"I wanted to continue with Al Ahly, but the spread of COVID made the situation extremely difficult and led to my departure," Weiler told MBC Masr.

"I played with Al Ahly using the same approach both before and after the pandemic. I don't believe the team's performance changed as some people think.

"I like my team to play direct football towards the goal, and I don't prefer too much possession that might bore the fans.

"I always aimed for big wins and didn't enjoy winning by just one goal. This approach made the fans enjoy Al Ahly's games with me."

It appears Weiler only has good memories from his time in charge of the Club of the Century, though, especially of the supporters.

"I have never seen fans as strong and magnificent as Al Ahly's. The fans are the ones who elevated the club to its prestigious status," he added.
