LATEST: Big Update In Man Utd's New Manager Hunt

After Manchester United's 5-2 win with interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy in charge on Wednesday, there has been a big update in the club's pursuit of a new head coach.

The Red Devils rediscovered their goalscoring form in a thrilling 5-2 victory over Leicester City at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup.

Interim coach Van Nistelrooy picked a familiar XI against a much-changed Foxes side for his first game in charge, despite a significant match against Chelsea on the horizon.

Managerial target Ruben Amorim, currently in charge of Sporting CP, had been tipped to in the dugout for that upcoming Premier League encounter, but the latest is that it could indeed still be Van Nistelrooy at the helm.

The Mirror has reported that the Dutchman has been booked to take up pre-match media duties, suggesting he is likely to oversee the game.

Following the sacking of Erik ten Hag on Monday, United acted quickly in identifying Amorim as their top candidate for the vacant role and were reportedly looking to appoint him in time for this weekend.

Negotiations, while still ongoing, are said to have hit a stumbling block over Amorim's release clause and a rumoured 30-day notice period he needs to give the Portuguese giants.

Sporting's aim is to ensure the 39-year-old's likely departure does not leave them in a spot of bother.

The talented young coach has been linked with Manchester City and Liverpool in the past, but appears set to be closing in on a move to the Red Devils.

United are currently 14th in the Premier League after nine games.
