The story
South African football legend and SuperSport TV pundit, Stanton Fredericks sat down with his ex-teammate, Michael Morton on his podcast to reflects on his remarkable journey that saw him represent Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Bafana Bafana.
"Stiga" was known for his skillful play, game-changing contributions and of course, the eye-catching hair.
As one of the very few players to have played for both Soweto giants, Fredericks heaped praise on a former teammate he played with at the Buccaneers.
When asked by Morton about which player he regards as the best he's ever played with — Stiga did not hesitate in naming the great Mbulelo Mabizela.
"The all-time greatest player I have ever had the privilege of sharing the field was Old-John Mabizela. OJ, [he could play] right-back, centre-mid, centre-back. He was strong in the tackle, good in the air, passes like a boss, runs for days," states Stiga, naming the ex-Pirates captain's best attributes.
Despite his incredible talent, the former Bafana Bafana star frequently made headlines for his ill-discipline off the field.
After his successful stint at Orlando Pirates, he was snapped by English Premier League giants, Tottenham Hotspur in 2003, but his tenure there was cut short due to misconduct, making only seven league appearances for the London club.
He then moved to Valerenga in Norway, and upon returning to South Africa, he played for several clubs including Mamelodi Sundowns, Platinum Stars, Bidvest Wits, Chippa United, Mpumalanga Black Aces, AmaZulu FC, and Royal Eagles.
Stiga mentioned Mabizela's unforgettable debut at Spurs, where he scored remarkable pile-driver against Leicester City at White Heart Lane.
"He was playing for Pirates as a defender, he makes his debut as a midfielder [for Spurs] and he scores the goal of the week. There's nobody else that can be in that conversation," added Fredericks.
