It was not a happy outing for the Club of the Century in the latest iteration of the Cairo Derby.
As winners of last season's CAF Champions League, they were in the Super Cup once again and, only for the second time ever, contested the title against bitter rivals Zamalek, who won the CAF Confederation Cup last campaign.
Although the Red Devils opened the scoring through Wessam Abou Ali, Nasser Mansy equalised for Zamalek almost immediately after coming on as a substitute and the match eventually went to penalties.
Despite initially taking the lead, it would be the White Knights who ended up victorious in the CAF club competition curtain-raiser as they won 4-3 on penalties.
With it being their fifth Super Cup victory, the occasion was also a special one for their new left-back Mahmoud Bentayg.
The match was the Moroccan's debut for the north African juggernauts, having joined on loan from Ligue 1 giants AS Saint-Etienne.
His first assignment as a Zamalek player would be to defend the reigning CAF Men's Interclub Player of the Year, Tau, and while the Bafana Bafana star did not score, Bentayg admitted that he felt he was Ahly's biggest threat.
"The player I liked most in Al Ahly was Percy Tau, and I was fully focused during the match to be able to stop him," the ex-Raja Club Athletic star said, as per Akhbar El Youm

Tau seems to be returning to his best form for the Cairo-based outfit as these compliments have been accompanied by goals on the continent, with the 30-year-old having scored twice during the CAF Champions League second round preliminary stage against Gor Mahia.
