Official: African Giants Senegal Sack 2021 AFCON-Winning Boss

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) have officially made the surprise decision to part ways with their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations-winning head coach Aliou Cisse.

The 48-year-old is a legendary figure within Senegalese football.

As a player, Cisse captained the west African nation to a quarter-final berth at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, but perhaps his greatest achievement came as a manager.

In 2022, the Ziguinchor native saw his Senegal charges defeat Egypt at the Stade d'Olembe in Cameroon to claim the nation's first-ever AFCON title.

It was a culmination of a decade's work within the national team as he was first appointed as an assistant coach of the Lions of Teranga in 2012.

Despite perhaps being Senegal's greatest-ever head coach, it seems the Cisse era with Sadio Mane and company has reached its conclusion because nations's sports ministry have decided against offering him a new contract after he failed to win this past AFCON as well as reach the quarterfinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The official statement also stated that an interim staff will be constructed for Senegal's next set of 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Malawi as the search for a permanent successor commences.

According to Senegalese publication Taggat, the nation's sports ministry would like a Senegalese tactician to succeed him.
