The story

Legendary South African striker, Benni McCarthy touched down in Johannesburg this week to dome punditry work for SuperSport's UEFA Champions League coverage.

The 46-year-old, who parted ways with Manchester United in June after two seasons working under Erik ten Hag, spoke about his most memorable Champions League moment.

As one of Mzansi's most decorated footballers, Benni remains the only South African player to win the prestigious European cup competition.

The former Blackburn Rovers, Ajax Amsterdam and Orlando Pirates gunman won the tournament two decades ago with Portuguese giants FC Porto, under the tutelage of the 'Special One' Jose Mourinho.

Benni was seated alongside former Bafana teammates Shaun Bartlett and Bongani Khumalo in the SuperSport studios for Tuesday's Champions League coverage, when host Lwazi Ziqubu asked him about his famous triumph in 2004.

"I think it's any footballer's dream to play in the competition. It's so prestigious and if you are at the elite level in your sport, that's where you want to play," noted Benni, adding:

"So, to have had that opportunity to play in it and to go all the way to the final and winning it, was just the most extraordinary thing because we weren't expected to do that. But we did it because we had great team spirit [and] we had a fantastic manager."
