UCL: Barca Off To Losing Start, Arsenal Drop Points

AS Monaco 2-1 Barcelona

FC Barcelona started their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 2-1 loss to AS Monaco on Thursday night.

The Catalan giants got off to a horrible start when they were reduced to ten men after just minutes when defender Eric Garcia was shown a straight red card.

Monaco then took the lead ten minutes later via a thunderous strike from Maghnes Akliouche that left goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen flat-footed.

Barcelona did pull themselves level in the 28th minute when 17-year-old Lamine Yamal, who cut in from the right and unleashed a lovely low strike from the edge of the box.

However, the French outfit restored their lead with 20 minutes left in the second half George Ilenikhena with a composed finish to become Monaco's youngest scorer in the tournament at 18.

Atalanta 0-0 Arsenal

Atalanta and Arsenal settled for a share of the spoils after playing to a 0-0 draw on Thursday evening.

Declan Rice was back in the Gunners line-up after he was suspended for the win over Tottenham Hotspur while Gabriel Jesus was given the captain's armband in his first start of the season.

After a goalless first half, the Serie A side were afforded the chance to open the scoring after being awarded a penalty on 50 minutes. Mateo Retegui stepped and saw his spot-kick saved by Raya, who also kept out the rebound effort.

The Gunners were unable to trouble Atlanta ay the other end and had to settle for a point on the road.

Feyenoord 0-4 Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen enjoyed a wonderful start to their campaign after thrashing Feyenoord 4-0 on Thursday evening.

The Bundesliga champions were too strong for their Dutch counterparts on the night after scoring four goals in the first half, with Florian Wirtz opening the scoring on five minutes.

Alex Grimaldo doubled the lead before Wirtz added another and Timon Wellenreuther put he ball through his own net on the stroke of halftime.

Atletico Madrid 1-1 RB Leipzig

Atletico Madrid rallied from behind to secure a 2-1 win over RB Leipzig at the Estádio Cívitas Metropolitano.

The Bundesliga side got the opening goal as early as the fourth minute, with the higly-rated Benjamin Sesko opening his account for the season.

Diego Simeone's charges got the equaliser in the 28th minute courtesy of a strike from talisman Antoine Griezmann.

The game was headed for a draw before Jose Gimenez popped up with the winning goal in the 90th minute after being set up by Griezmann.
