Sundowns Join Chiefs, Pirates In Appollis Race

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has confirmed that the Brazilians have thrown their name in the hat for the capture of Oswin Appollis, but has revealed why he is skeptical about a move happening.

Appollis has been in scintillating form for both club and country, which has seen a number of clubs chase his signature.

Among them have been Esperance of Tunisia, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and more recently Sundowns, as stated by their coach.

The Brazilians have a 40-man squad at the moment; however, they would be open to the addition of Appollis to the squad, though Mngqithi is doubtful that a move could materialize in this transfer window.

"I would love to get any of the top players to be honest, and Appollis is one of the players that I like – but many coaches would say the same thing; you don't always get what you want in life, because we already have around 40 players," he told journalists after his side's 2-0 win over SuperSport at the Loftus Versveld Stadium.

"But it will be important to get a player like that, if ever the opportunity avails itself. But I don't think it will avail itself because I know Esperance was interested in him and they couldn't get hold of him.

"So, at this stage I would not want to talk much about [it]. It's immaterial for me," he added.

Appollis coach' Phuthi Mohafe recently gave an explanation for the attacker's Premiership opener against AmaZulu after he was surprisingly left out of the squad.

"Oswin is alive, Oswin is here. He didn't play, he was in the national team. So we have to rest him, we need him more going forward," Mohafe said.
