Have Chiefs Finally Found The Right Defenders?

Have Chiefs Finally Found The Right Defenders?

Kaizer Chiefs have gone into the market to bolster their defence over the last few seasons, but they don't seem to have found their perfect back four as yet.

In this transfer window, the Soweto giants have brought in Inacio Miguel, Rushwin Dortley and Bongani Sam to bolster their defence, with goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari added to the rearguard.

Last season, in an effort to improve on their defending, Amakhosi acquired the services of Given Msimango and Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, before signing the late Luke Fleurs as a free agent after the close of the transfer window.

Msimango and Ditlhokwe were the preferred central defensive pairing at the start of the campaign, but the latter sustained an injury while on duty with the national team and missed a big part of the season. By the time he returned, Amakhosi had gone through different central defensive partnerships with the likes of Njabulo Ngcobo, Edmilson Dove and Zitha Kwinika rotating alongside Msimango.

In 2022/23, when Arthur Zwane was in charge, Chiefs signed Kwinika and Dove, as well as Dillan Solomons as a right back. The partnership of Kwinika and Dove was not able to last long because they went into the market at the end of the campaign to bolster the defence.

In the campaign before that, Amakhosi had signed Ngcobo, who came in as defender of the season. They also signed Sibusiso Mailiso, Sifiso Hlanti and Thabani Dube. They were not able to find a consistent central defensive pairing.

The defenders Amakhosi have signed will be under lots of pressure to deliver as the Soweto giants look to end their trophy drought.
