The Argentine striker has been hugely successful since joining the Citizens in 2022, having claimed nine trophies at club and international level, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the 22/23 UEFA Champions League and 2024 Copa America.
Alvarez had been vocal about his desire to start more important games for City despite featuring 54 times last season, with Pep Guardiola having said it was ultimately up to the player to decide his future.
He has now committed to a six-year deal with Los Rojiblancos after the clubs struck an agreement over a deal that could cost the Spanish giants up to €95 million in total.
