Should Chiefs Have Been Patient With Defender?

Omega Mdaka for Kaizer Chiefs dribbles past Kagiso Madisha of Orlando Pirates during the 2021 DStv Diski Challenge match between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs on 10 April 2021 at Dobsonville Stadium

Kaizer Chiefs' planning for the new season has been affected by injury concerns although the club is understood to be working on improving the situation.

With Chiefs currently in Turkiye where the players are being taken through their paces by newly appointed coach Nasreddine Nabi, there have been concerns about injuries after two players were forced to leave the pre-season camp prematurely.

Mozambican international Edmilson Dove and newly signed former Orlando Pirates left-back Bongani Sam have been forced to withdraw from camp to fly back to Mzansi for treatment after picking respective injuries.

Following this week's unveiling of Chiefs' development product Omega Mdaka by Stellenbosch FC, some feel that the 20-year-old could have been a good replacement at left-back for Amakhosi for the upcoming season had he not been released halfway through the previous campaign.

"The worrying factor is that the club is spending a lot of money in the development of these players to just let go of them like that. I remember there were reports about some of the boys being released for refusing to be ball boys, but we don't really know what happened. Whatever the issue was, I still believe that that's something that could have been done to sort it out," former Chiefs midfielder Humphrey Mlwane said, speaking exclusively to the Siya crew.

"Maybe those boys were not feeling right mentally at that moment and needed some guidance in the right direction. Had they been told in the right way about what was required of them and the plans, they would have done what was expected of them, I do want to believe that. They would still be with the team now, because for me it doesn't make sense discarding a 20-year-old for someone who is 26 or 28," said Mlwane.
