Zamalek Forfeit Cairo Derby Against Tau’s Al Ahly

Egyptian giants Zamalek have refused to play the latest edition of the Cairo Derby against Al Ahly, giving Percy Tau's team a walkover victory over their rivals.

Zamalek's last home loss against El Masry is believed to be the reason for their refusal to take on the Club of the Century.

After that 2-1 defeat, the White Castle lodged a complaint with the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) citing referee injustice and outlining four demands for their continued participation in the Egyptian Premier League.

One of those demands were that all top-flight teams play all their first-leg matches in the league, something their eternal rivals had not done given that they have played only 18 matches so far this season.

Another demand was the appointment of a foreign independent committee, and that the Clubs Association reorganise and reschedule league matches to ensure complete impartiality.

The five-time CAF Champions League winners made their last league outing against Pharco as the deadline for all the demands to be met, but the EFA and the Clubs Association did not meet any of them, leading to Zamalek confirming they would not play in the latest Cairo Derby, which was scheduled to kick off later today, 25 June 2024.

As a consequence of their refusal to play, the EFA has awarded the Club of the Century a walkover victory.

it is understood that not only were Ahly awarded the three points, but Zamalek were also deducted three points from their current league tally.
