The Bondy native won the World Cup as a teenager when Les Bleus claimed the 2018 edition in Russia. Four years later, he made it yet to another final in Qatar, but despite his hat-trick, it was Messi and Argentina who emerged victorious.

The one international tournament where Mbappe has perhaps not excelled are the EUROs. His lone appearance at the continental spectacle in 2021, France were eliminated by Switzerland in the Round of 16.

Losing in that iteration of the competition now makes it 24 years since France last won it and has this led to their captain claiming that Europe's biggest football tournament is harder to win than the World Cup.

They asked the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner about his former teammate's statement and Messi did not share the same sentiment as the Real Madrid man.

"Everyone values the competition they play in," the Rosario native started off by telling ESPN Argentina.

"Obviously, the Euros are a very important tournament with the best teams, but it excludes Argentina, a three-time World Cup champion, Brazil, a five-time World Cup champion, and Uruguay, a two-time World Cup champion. There are many world champions left out, making it hard to claim it's the toughest.

"The World Cup features the best teams, including all the world champions generally, and that's why everyone wants to become World Champion," he concluded.
