Insider: Da Gama Applied For 'Big Three' Job

In what could be an attempt for realising his coaching dream, Owen da Gama has had his camp working on applying for a job for him at Kaizer Chiefs, close sources have revealed.

Da Gama has been away from the limelight and top flight football coaching, having decided to focus on helping at grassroots level of the game, since parting ways with Sekhukhune United in 2022 after a short spell.

Last season, the well-travelled coached had a spell with Motsepe Foundation Championship side Black Leopards but left after the club's failure to maintain their second-tier status.

The Limpopo outfit did manage to get back to the league though through buying the status of All Stars FC, but Da Gama was no longer part of the team.

Having spent some time keeping up with the latest trends in modern football and improving his coaching knowledge, Da Gama is said to be ready for a return to the top flight for the 2024/25 season, with his handlers already assessing the options for him.

The 62-year-old former Orlando Pirates coach has previously told Soccer Laduma that it was a dream for him to coach Amakhosi.

"Chiefs are a powerhouse in South African football and there are no doubts about it. At times, when you look at Chiefs, you see the potential and you see how far it can go," the coach Da Gama said at the time, in part.

"That's one of my dreams, to go to a club like Chiefs and sit down with the (Motaung) family and say what is the way forward. How can we take it to another level? With my knowledge and experience, I believe that we can take the club to a whole new level because I see so much potential at Chiefs and it's unbelievable. Chiefs are playing in a level now where they can go three, four steps higher. There is so much potential at the club and I really respect that," he said.

With the Glamour Boys expected to decide on a new coach to take over from Cavin Johnson who has been in charge on an interim basis, sources have confirmed that Da Gama's handlers are in process of sending his CV to Naturena.

An insider now discusses the latest regarding Da Gama's interest in coaching Amakhosi.

"When you talk about coach Owen da Gama, you talk about somebody who needs no introduction in South African football as his work and achievements are there for everyone to see. He's back and looking for opportunities for next season. It is no secret that the coach has an interest in a good project where he would lead a club to achieve its objectives and success and the Chiefs job is of so much interest to him. He believes that he can change the fortunes of the club. The coach's representatives have forwarded his CV to Chiefs and will see how it goes," a close source said.

The Siya crew understands Da Gama sent in his CV a few weeks ago, but as per reports at Soccer Laduma, Chiefs are expected to be lining up Pitso Mosimane and Alexandre Santos as options, while Nasreddine Nabi seems to be the favourite that could be selected as the next head coach.
