No Illusions For Khune Regarding Chiefs No.1 Spot

Despite his recent return to the Kaizer Chiefs matchday squad, interim coach Cavin Johnson has made it clear to veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune who is the club's number one goalkeeper.

Khune, 35, was recently reinstated to the Chiefs traveling squad by virtue of the club's second-choice goalkeeper Brandon Petersen receiving a red card whilst on the bench against TS Galaxy last week.

The move could be a set up for the long-serving goalkeeper to receive a well-deserved sendoff, either against Polokwane City or relegated Cape Town Spurs in the final two matches of the season.

But Johnson has revealed that Bruce Bvuma remains Chiefs' number one and that Khune would have to fight for his spot if he is to feature again this season.

"Look, in the dressing room it's positive. Itu has always given us positivity in the dressing room and the fact that he's been here for two decades is even more important and he knows what he has to contribute," he told journalists.

"He's back on the bench now because Brandon got a red card, but it was touch and go for him whether he was gonna make it and the gods of football make it possible for him to be on the bench in the last few games while Brandon is out.

"At the moment he is number two, he needs to fight but Bruce is there and he's number one," Johnson said.
