Downs players get close off the field

Mamelodi Sundowns have made the most of their international break with a team building day that seemingly took place over the weekend.

Although their is plenty of telepathy on the field of play, it's important for the Downs stars to fortify their bond away from football and to take their minds of a busy and second half of the season.

The ballers took part in a range of typical games night activities and a MasterChef cooking competition, which saw teams consisting of players and the coaching staff preparing dishes that were judged by scores.

"Team building is always really good for us, it obviously brings us together as a team. You always think about Ubuntu and unity, so it brings us together, brings that competitive edge within the group and that's good and exactly what we need.

"The new players are integrating into the mix and getting used to what a winning culture feels like," said goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse.

New players brought in during the January transfer window; Zuku Mdunyelwa, Matias Esquivel, Tashreeq Matthews and Thembinkosi Lorch were also heavily involved at the team building, which is a great opportunity for them to get properly integrated into the Downs squad and get to know their new teammates on a more personal level.

"The team building was really fun, I enjoyed it. Obviously you get mixed into different teams and groups and you get to know each other better, spend time and also communicate," said Matthews, who added:

"Besides that, off the field, we've also been doing stuff together during our off time like playing PlayStation."

"Team building activities build us as players, as we we are around one another a lot. [I want to] learn how they are off the field and not only know them on the field.

"So, it has helped us a lot in terms of understanding in terms of unity and to have an understanding of one another as players," said Mdunyelwa, reflecting on his first team building experience at Downs.
