Exclusive: Pirates Captaincy Confusion Clarified

With Orlando Pirates finalising preparations for their next match this weekend against Polokwane City, clarity has been provided on the team's captaincy 'confusion'.

During the Nedbank Cup Last 16 draw which was conducted on Monday, the Buccaneers were represented by Tapelo Xoki who served as the captain on the evening where the team was drawn against Motsepe Foundation Championship side Hungry Lions.

There seemed to be confusion among some sections of the supporters in the comments' section under the Pirates tweet where the club confirmed the fixture and addressed Xoki as the captain.

Questions were asked on where club captain Innocent Maela was but insiders have confirmed that there was nothing unusual about Xoki attending the Nedbank Cup draw when required to do so.

When Maela was appointed as club captain in 2022 following the departure of Happy Jele, Bucs confirmed that Richard Ofori was the vice-captain.

"A captain is a leader of men, a player who embodies the core values of the club. He inspires those around him and leads in an exemplary manner – on and off the field," the club stated at the time, in part.

Sources have confirmed that Pirates are happy with Xoki also forming part of the players representing the club on and off the field when required to do so.

"Innocent Maela remains the captain of the club as you might have seen in the game against Crystal Lake FC where he was wearing the captain's armband as per usual when he is on the field," said the source.

"Tapelo Xoki is part of the club's captains' committee. Tapelo will from time to time represent the club as the captain when he is required to do that and there is nothing wrong with that," concluded the source.
