The story

It's been more than a decade since Lionel Messi fronted the last FIFA Street game and the experimental football video game series is dearly missed by football gaming communities.

The FIFA Street series came out at a time when developers were taking risks with video games, especially EA Sports, who had similar versions of these type of games with NBA and NFL Street.

FIFA Street took the sport gaming world by storm in 2005, released on the iconic PlayStation 2 and proved to be an instant hit.

Fans enjoyed seeing some of the favourite ballers, Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry, young Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney depicted playing the beautiful game in its purists form.

Although FIFA Street wasn't EA's first foray into the street format sports game, taking football into the underground world of freestyle football is simply one of the coolest things EA managed during their FIFA era.

The 4 v 4 format, played on enclosed pitches, saw the game shift from one end to the other in an instant. It captured the imagination of football lovers who probably always wanted to see their favourite ballers play the game in similar conditions to regular fans, in cages or five-a-side courts.

Seeing players display some immense skills, while wearing casual shorts and sneakers, was an aesthetic masterstroke from EA Sports and it's no surprise as to why FIFA Street was being played all over the globe like a regular FIFA game.

The lack of referees, the option to add a fifth player, the Rule the Street career mode, the skill combo features and the general aesthetic of the game, it's safe to say that FIFA Street was ahead of its time.

With the FIFA Street series possessing quite the cult following, EA has tried to replicate it with the VOLTA series but it just isn't the same...
