Where Do Bafana's Goal Celebrations Against Morocco Come From?

Makgopa and Mokoena added salt to the Moroccan wounds with their awesome celebrations, as the former did a popular South African TikTok dance challenge, known as the Skomota dance.

In true Bafana style, the players celebrated both goals with coordinated celebrations. Here's a look at where both celebrations come from.

Check it out!

What's the story?

Bafana Bafana sent Morocco packing on Tuesday in the Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 at the Stade Laurent Pokou Stadium.

Both goals came from Orlando Pirates star Evidence Makgopa and Man of the Match Teboho Mokoena, who took the time to showcase some memorable celebrations.

Let's take a closer look at where the players got these celebrations from...

Bafana Bafana celebrations

Second-half goals from Evidence Makgopa and Teboho Mokoena earned Bafana Bafana a major upset over World Cup semi-finalists Morocco, with a 2-0 Round of 16 win on Tuesday evening.

The lanky Makgopa caught the Atlas Lions defense napping as he opened the scoring in the 57th minute and Mokoena rounded off his formidable display with a superb freekick during stoppage time.

Makgopa and Mokoena added salt to the Moroccan wounds with their awesome celebrations, with the former doing a popular South African TikTok dance challenge, known as the "Skomota dance."

The dance was popularised by Thabang Sefala, popularly known as Skomota. The Limpopo entertainer became a viral sensation on TikTok for his unique dance, resulting in him crossing over into the music scene and working with the likes of Makhadzi and Shebeshxt.

Here's a look at the Skomota dance done by the man himself:

Evidence Makgopa and goalkeeper Veli Mothwa led the Skomota celebration for Bafana:

Teboho Mokoena put the Moroccans to sleep with a spectacular freekick in the fourth minute of stoppage time after being brought down outside the box by Sofyan Amrabat.

Mokoena marked his wonder strike by doing a celebration created by five-time Ballon d'Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo. The Sundowns star was joined by his teammates in doing CR7's "Sleeping celebration."

The Portuguese superstar debuted this celebration in October 2022 for Manchester United in a 2-1 win over Everton, which was his 700th club career goal.

Ronaldo's muted celebration made instant waves in the football world, with Mokoena and his Sundowns teammates using it on several occasions.

Mokoena went viral for reenacting this CR7 move, with many online fans saying that he's avenged Portugal's 2022 FIFA World Cup quarter-final loss to the Atlas Lions.

These celebrations might not be as iconic as Siphiwe Tshabalala's in the 2010 FIFA World Cup opener against Mexico, but Makgopa and Mokoena's efforts won't be forgotten in a hurry by South African football fans.
