Fan Arrested After Attacking Ghana Boss

Fan Arrested After Attacking Ghana Boss

Ghana head coach Chris Hughton was reportedly physically attacked by an angry Ghanaian supporter.

A Ghanaian fan has reportedly been arrested for physically attacking Ghana head coach Chris Hughton at the team hotel on Sunday.

The Black Stars suffered a shock defeat to Cape Verde in their first game of the Africa Cup of Nations. The islanders took the lead in the 17th minute through Jamiro Monteiro and Ghana equalised in the 56th minute via Alexander Djiku.

However, Garry Rodrigues stole all three points for Cape Verde in the 92nd minute, staging one of the opening round's biggest upsets so far.

It seems that the result sent some supporters into a rage, as one of them is alleged to have assaulted the Ghana coach after the match at the team hotel.

According Instant Foot, it took the intervention of a few Ghanaian diplomats who were present on the scene to stop the attack.

The unidentified individual is said to have been handed over to the Ivorian police in Abidjan.

However, contrary to the reports, journalist Muftawu Nabila Abdulai claimed on X that the incident didn't turn physical as other reports suggests.

He wrote: "[I'm] told supporter was angry and used foul words on Chris Hughton and security took him away, but he's not been arrested. In fact, there was no contact with the coach."

According to the Daily Mail, Hughton said after the match: "We are incredibly hugely disappointed with the result. We came into the game with a game plan to start on the front foot.

"We came into the game with a game plan. We changed the system a bit so we can start on the front foot. We thought the team that were put out was certainly a more offensive team. This was our intention.

"I think it rocked us the goal that we conceded but I thought we got back into the game. At that stage it looked like we could go on and win it. We are hugely, hugely disappointed with our result.

"And I know and this group of players also know how the Ghanaian people see this game, see this tournament and our expectations going into this one."
