As Kaizer Chiefs are expected to make a big decision in the coming weeks about a permanent coach, the Soweto giants have been advised on what else might need to be looked at to bring back the glory days at the club.
While Chiefs chairman Dr Kaizer Motaung has urged fans to exercise patience regarding inconsistent results and their trophy drought, the big boss confirmed the club's search for a new head coach, speaking in an interview on SportsLIVE with BBK recently.
Amakhosi have continued with their campaign under Cavin Johnson on an interim basis, while the search for a new coach is understood to be ongoing.
Pitso Mosimane, Nasreddine Nabi, Raul Caneda, Sven Vandenbroeck have all been linked with the club, while Johnson has also expressed an interest in getting the job permanently, depending on the team's results in the coming weeks.
South African football legend Smiley Moosa has advised that Chiefs should also consider undergoing a squad overhaul for a fresh start.
The Good
"My personal opinion is that Chiefs should make several changes other than just changing coaches. If you understand football the way I do, having played with the best in this country and in Europe, changing coaches isn't always the way to solve problems. The only thing that you can do when building a team is to assemble a squad of good players who understand football," said Moosa.
The Bad
"It is either Kaizer can't see anymore, or he has completely lost it when it comes to football, because any person in football whether it's Alex Ferguson or anybody, will tell you the same thing that I am going to tell you. Changing coaches is not going to help you. If you bring (Pep) Guardiola to Chiefs, he will get rid of all those players and that's the same thing I would do. For a start, he would get rid of the players to avoid inheriting what (Molefi) Ntseki inherited and all the other coaches who were there before him who got fired after failing to win anything. I'm talking about Arthur Zwane (Zwane was demoted), Stuart Baxter (during his second spell) and all the other coaches who have been there in recent times," he said.
The Ugly
"Chiefs do not have players of high quality like those that they used to have back in the day. I'm talking about players like Ace Ntsoelengoe, Maria-Maria (Lamola) and many others of that calibre. They are signing players from Stellenbosch, Moroka Swallows and so on, please man. I mean, Keagan Dolly, do you think he can make any difference at Chiefs now? I don't see why he is still playing for a club like Chiefs. How would a club as big as Chiefs still depend on him? Look at the current situation at Chiefs, the team is struggling, and you want to bring a coach from... I don't know where, and I put my money where my mouth is, he too is going to get fired. There will be no results. It's like building a house, how would you build a mansion with sticks and stones and paper? What is going to happen to that house when a strong wind blows? It will be gone. You need a strong foundation to build a house, and if you do that not even a hurricane will destroy your house," he added.
"I would refuse to play for Chiefs"
"I am 71 years old but I would refuse to play for Kaizer Chiefs. I would refuse to play with the current Chiefs players because they would ruin my reputation. Even at my age, some of them are not in my shape. Yes, they will win the odd game 1-0 here and 1-0 there, but that would be as that far that would go. But you know what that does happen when you win 1-0 here and 1-0 there, you will be fooling yourself to think that you are good," concluded Moosa.
Who should Chiefs appoint as new coach?
