Wydad 'Low' On Cash

Wydad 'Low' On Cash

Despite their $3 million (R57 million) prize money for making it all the way to the African Football League final, Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club are reportedly already strapped for cash.

When Dr. Patrice Motsepe announced the AFL initiative, he explained that its purpose was to empower African clubs to be able to unshackle themselves of the financial burdens that have been holding them back over the years.

North African giants Wydad participated and made it as far as the competition's first-ever final, where they faced Mamelodi Sundowns.

However, according to Kooora, their large financial gain from the tournament has already been spent on private trips to travel for the AFL and the CAF Champions League, and the club now finds itself in a precarious financial position.

The same report claims that the Red Castle still have a fine more than $900 000 (R17 million) that they need to be pay urgently or risk being banned from doing business in the next transfer window, something head coach Adil Ramzi cannot afford to happen given the fragility of his job security at the moment.

The club seems to be struggling for cash immensely, epitomised by the fact that they will need to catch an ordinary connecting flight in order to go to Tanzania to take on Simba SC in the next round of CAF Champions League matches.

Typically, Wydad would catch a chartered flight to their destination, but such is the delicacy of their fiscal situation that they will now need to fly to Doha, Qatar, and wait five hours so they can then board the airplane that will take them to Dar es Salaam.
