Goal Or Foul: Bizarre Mothwa Moment Debated

Goal Or Foul: Bizarre Mothwa Moment Debated

AmaZulu and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Veli Mothwa conceded a strange goal in Usuthu's draw against Chippa United on Saturday, which sparked a debate on whether it was meant to be awarded. Check it out!

What's the story?

A tough goalkeeping moment for Veli Mothwa in AmaZulu and Chippa United's 1-1 draw on Saturday was the hot topic from this weekend's short DStv Premiership action.

Mothwa has kept the most clean sheets in the league so far and could've stretched his lead at the top if it wasn't for his inexplicable own goal at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Let's take a closer look at how fans reacted on social media...

Fans question Mothwa's own goal

A dramatic encounter at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday saw the Chilli Boys escape with a point against AmaZulu, curtesy of a Veli Mothwa own goal.

The match also saw two red cards for Chippa United's Thabiso Lebitso and Elmo Kambindu, with the result leaving the hosts on the night in seventh place, with AmaZulu find themselves just outside the top eight in ninth position.

The Mothwa incident occurred in the 78th minute when the 32-year-old shot-stopper struggled to deal with a Ronaldo Maarman shot, with Elmo Kambindu putting pressure on the AmaZulu skipper in secure the ball in the follow-up, before the ball was bundled into the back of the net when the keeper landed on the ground.

It's being debated online whether Kambindu's contact with Mothwa was enough for it to be called a foul, while other fans on Twitter/X timeline poked fun at Mothwa by saying he's protecting his betting slip.

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeepr Brandon Petersen also grabbed the attention of fans on social media with his own blunder in Amakhosi's 2-1 loss to Golden Arrows in Hammersdale, KwaZulu Natal on Saturday.

Petersen failed to control a back pass of Botswanan center back Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, resulting in Golden Arrows forward Knox Mutizwa pouncing on the loose ball.
