Zambia Set To Approach Sundowns Coach?

Having retired from professional football as a player, former Mamelodi Sundowns and Zambia goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene has embarked on a coaching career.

He is currently the Masandawana goalkeeper's assistant coach and now the Siya crew understands that the Zambia national team, which has qualified for the AFCON in Ivory Coast in January, are set to ask whether they can engage Mweene as their own goalkeeper coach.

Siya sources in Zambia have indicated that the 2012 Afcon-winning goalkeeper is earmarked as an option to train their national team's goalkeepers for the tournament.

"The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) is already working with his club in South Africa (Mamelodi Sundowns) to see on how they can have him just for the tournament in Ivory Coast," said the Siya source.

"Then they will see another way going forward. They know his club still needs him but because they will need a break during the Afcon in Ivory Coast, maybe they can allow him to help his country then," the source added.

Another Siya source added that Mweene's role could not only help Chipolopolo in coaching the goalkeepers but also in motivating the whole team to fight for AFCON glory.

"You know he is a natural motivator and having been there and winning the Afcon in 2012 is good for the team right now because he will be talking from experience. There could be a few players who may be in Ivory Coast from that squad that won AFCON in Gabon but his presence will mean a lot to the young players who have always looked up to him as their role model," said the other Siya source.

"And that's why FAZ has decided to engage him as one of the goalkeeper coaches, as well as a motivator during the tournament," the source concluded.
