Twist In Mabasa’s Pirates Situation

Twist In Mabasa’s Pirates Situation

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - AUGUST 30: Tshegofatso Mabasa of Swallows celebrates his 2nd goal during the DStv Premiership match between Moroka Swallows and Cape Town Spurs at Dobsonville Stadium on August 30, 2023 in Johannesburg, South Africa. (Photo by Lee Warren/Gallo Images),IMOÙøüB_³ñü

Orlando Pirates have failed to register a goal in their last few matches and in their most recent match, crashed out of the CAF Champions League preliminary round.

As a result, news reaching the Siya crew is that the club could look to make adjustments to the squad upfront, with the lack of goals understood to be a sore point for management.

And the solution could well lie with one of their players out on loan.

Indications are that the club's top brass have been watching the performances of striker Tshegofatso Mabasa who is currently on loan at Moroka Swallows for the rest of the season.

The 27-year-old currently tops the Premiership's goalscoring charts, with six goals.

Siya sources have revealed that talks regarding the future of Mabasa look set to be held and it is believed that the player could make a return to his parent club earlier than anticipated, should an agreement be reached.

"They will talk. They feel that they should have kept him and send other players or strikers on loan. They want him back before the loan deal expires in June next year. It's true he is doing well for Swallows right now and that's what had prompted the talks between the two teams and the main problem will be what Swallows will demand in return because if this happens it will disturb their plans as well," a source informed the Siya crew.

Should the two clubs agree on a return for the player, it will need to take place during the January transfer window, which would allow Bucs to register the player for the second half of the campaign.

An insider has also revealed that the player is enjoying his football at the Dube Birds, and has his eye on being selected for Bafana Bafana for the AFCON in January.

"Although Pirates are negotiating for an early return, the player has his eyes set on Bafana Bafana squad for AFCON and he believes that playing regularly for Swallows gives him that chance of being selected by the national team coach. However, we all know he is a Pirates player and as it stands, they want him back earlier than June 2024," the source concluded.

Should the respective clubs mutually agree for Mabasa to return prematurely, it won't be the first time in the PSL. Keletso Makgalwa ended his loan deal prematurely when TS Galaxy sent the player back to Mamelodi Sundowns. Bongani Sam is another player who failed to complete a season-long loan when Maritzburg parted ways with the player after nine matches.

Soccer Laduma contacted Pirates for comment, but attempts proved futile.
