Burnley striker Lyle Foster's goal on Sunday saw him join an elite club of South Africans who have scored in the Premier league – but he has also broken a 10-year hoodoo that has been standing since 2013.

Perhaps the only highlight for Vincent Kompany's team in their 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa at Turfmoore on Sunday was the performance of Foster, who capped it off with a spectacular goal that proved to be a consolation for the club.

It was the Clarets' first goal since they were promoted to the Premier League for this season.

With his left footed strike, Foster became the ninth South African player to find the back of the net in arguably the world's toughest league.

Only Benni McCarthy, Shaun Bartlett, Steven Pienaar, Philemon Masinga, Quinton Fortune, Mark Fish, Eric Tinkler, and Mbulelo Mabizela have managed to do so before him.

Incredibly, Foster's strike was the first by a South African since Steven Pienaar had done so for Everton against Hull City in 2013, breaking a 10-year goal drought for South Africans in the league.

"Glory to God, I'm super happy, [it's] super special. It doesn't feel as nice not to have won, but [I'm] happy to score the first goal back in the Premier League," Foster said of his goal.

The Noordgesig-born star will be looking to add to his tally when they take on Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup second round on Wednesday.
