Official: Greenwood Releases Statement After Man Utd Confirm He Will Leave

Mason Greenwood has released a statement after Manchester United confirmed he will leave the club.

Mason Greenwood has issued a statement following Manchester United's announcement that he will not play for the club again.

Following a long and drawn-out process, the Red Devils landed on not reintroducing the one-time England international to the first-team squad after his arrest in January 2022.

The charges he was facing were dropped earlier this year, but United suggested in a statement that bringing him back into the fold would be difficult given the sensitive nature of the situation.

On Monday, just moments after the 20-time English champions confirmed their decision, Greenwood said he believes it is an appropriate step as he wants to avoid being a "distraction" in Manchester.

"I want to start by saying I understand that people will judge me because of what they have seen and heard on social media, and I know people will think the worst. I was brought up to know that violence or abuse in any relationship is wrong, I did not do the things I was accused of, and in February I was cleared of all charges," he wrote, according to the club's website.

"However, I fully accept I made mistakes in my relationship, and I take my share of responsibility for the situations which led to the social media post. I am learning to understand my responsibilities to set a good example as a professional footballer, and I'm focused on the big responsibility of being a father, as well as a good partner.

"Today's decision has been part of a collaborative process between Manchester United, my family and me. The best decision for us all, is for me to continue my football career away from Old Trafford, where my presence will not be a distraction for the club."

Greenwood was detained last year and later charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour.

The charges were dropped in February this year, with the 21-year-old having not represented United or trained with his teammates since January 2022.
