A decision on Dani Alves has reportedly been made by the Spanish legal system following his arrest in January on suspicion of sexual assault.

According to Spanish publication Cadena Cope, the ex-Barcelona right-back is expected to be prosecuted on Wednesday.

Alves has been behind bars since his initial detainment in January 2023 for the alleged rape of a woman at a nightclub in Barcelona in December last year.

It is said the judge presiding over the case will inform him on Wednesday that the investigation is closed and that there is enough evidence to go to trial, which might only begin in October.

The outlet claims Alves, 40, will then have 24 hours to pay €150 000 (R2.9 million) in damages to the reported victim if he is found guilty.

Throughout the process, the Brazilian footballer has maintained his innocence, and has claimed his relations with the woman that night were consensual.
