How Sundowns Could Line-Up With Mendieta

How Sundowns Could Line-Up With Mendieta

As Mamelodi Sundowns prepare to welcome Junior Mendieta to the squad, Soccer Laduma looks at how the 29-year-old could fit in at the club.

Sundowns are set to have the Argentine midfielder on a three-year deal from Stellenbosch FC, as they look to dominate local football for yet another season.

But with so much quality in the side, and different options for head coach Rulani Mokwena in terms of how the team can line-up in the matches they play each week, it will be interesting to see where Mendieta will fit in.

The arrival of Mendieta will give Mokwena more options in attack, but he will definitely have a bigger headache in selecting his starting line-up, considering how well the player did at Stellenbosch in the past season.

In 31 appearances for the side, Mendieta scored 10 and contributed with nine assists. Sundowns have Themba Zwane, Neo Maema and, at times, Gaston Sirino in key attacking positions as support to striker Peter Shalulile, so Mendieta will come in and battle with these individuals for a spot in the team.

Former Sundowns midfielder Brent Carelse has given his thoughts on where he thinks Mendieta would fit in at Sundowns in the coming season.

"Mendieta obviously is an attacking player, so any of the five attacking positions he can fit in there. That is where he will compete for a position, as a number 10 or upfront. He will be one of the attackers in the team. There is a lot in the Sundowns team, so let's see," Carelse told the Siya crew.
