The 24-year-old has been crowned the Spanish top flight's best African player of the latest campaign following his impressive performances for the Yellow Submarine.

His 13 goals and 11 assists across all competitions were enough to convince fans and top African journalists that he had a better season in Spain than his continental counterparts.

Elated after picking up the silverware, the Umuahaia native said, as per LaLiga's official website: "I feel so happy to win this award.

"I've worked very hard this season, but I want to thank my teammates for making it possible. Without them this wouldn't have been possible for me… and the coach [Quique Setien] too. When the coach believes in you and gives you the confidence to play and enjoy yourself, it really motivates you.

"But I think I can still do more. I want to continue working hard. I'm still young, so I'm still learning. This is just the beginning."

The Super Eagle managed to edge out Mid-Season African MVP Inaki Williams of Athletic Bilbao and last season's winner of the accolade, Sevilla's Yassine Bounou, to capture his first taste of the prize.
