According to L'Equipe, Major League Soccer side Inter Miami and LaLiga champions Barcelona are looking to join forces in order to facilitate the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner's return to the Camp Nou and later a switch to the US.
The Argentine's reported desire to return to Catalonia has been well-documented in recent weeks, but because of the LaLiga club's financial struggles, it is Al Hilal who currently seem most likely to land the legendary forward's signature, with the Saudi Pro League outfit having reportedly offered the 35-year-old a deal worth €600 million (R21.7 billion) a season to lure him to the Middle East.
However, it seems the American and Spanish teams are hatching a plan to thwart that transfer from happening.
In an effort to circumvent Barca's financial troubles, it is claimed Inter Miami are willing to sign Messi now and loan him to the five-time European champions for the next six to 18 months, after which he would then play for the MLS club.
The same report suggests that the Rosario native, along with bidding farewell to the fans of the club that has become so special to him, wants to play at the highest level possible before trying to retain Argentina's Copa America title in 2024.
