Riveiro Reveals Secret Behind Pirates Players’ Progress

Sipho Chaine of Orlando Pirates clears ball away from teammate Sandile Mthethwa during the DStv Premiership 2022/23 football match between Swallows FC and Orlando Pirates at Dobsonville Stadium, Johannesburg on 03 March 2023

Jose Riveiro has revealed the secret behind Orlando Pirates players' impressive performances closer to the closing stages of the season.

The Buccaneers have kept their hopes of finishing in second place alive after a 2-1 win over Cape Town City on Saturday, although they are currently in third place following SuperSport United's win over AmaZulu on Sunday.

"The players improve because they want to improve, that's the first thing that you need. Luckily, we have a group where everybody is trying to progress (and) to get integrated in the team dynamics and that's the key in the end if we speak about every of our players. I think there's many who are improving from our point of view," said the coach, speaking to the media.

"In reference to defender Sandile Mthethwa who started in place of injured Tapelo Xoki and has been making progress in recent matches, the coach said, "The one that you mentioned is one of those cases, we are so happy to see him performing because like I said, things happen every week. We need to replace players sometimes, we manage to have a period of continuity but now for example for this game we couldn't repeat the starting eleven. If a player is coming suddenly to the starting eleven and is performing in the level that he did today, it means he's training well, he's involved and that's something we as a group, as coaches we feel very proud of them."
