Official: Owners Stop Funding Egyptian Giants

Pyramids FC's owners have made the shock decision to stop investing in the Egyptian giants.

On Monday night, last season's Egyptian Premier League runners-up failed to capture their first-ever piece of silverware after they were defeated 2-1 in extra time by Al Ahly in the Egypt Cup final.

The Club of the Century came from behind to win the encounter after Pyramids' Walid El Katri opened the scoring for Jaime Pacheco's men late in the second half, with the Red Devils replying almost immediately through Mahmoud Kharaba and then Hamdi Fathi.

That final was shrouded by controversy prior to kick-off, however, as Pyramids had their request for a foreign-based referee to officiate the final denied.

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) insisted that an Egyptian referee take charge of the cup final based on a recommendation from the head of the EFA's Refereeing Committee, Vitor Pereira, and consequently, Amin Omar oversaw the Red Devils' triumph over their city rivals.

After their request to have a foreign official for the match rejected, Pyramids issued a press release stating that owner Salem Al-Shamsi and his board of directors would stop funding the Egyptian giants, with the club insisting they were victims of a lack of justice.

"Pyramids FC owners have decided to suspend their investments in the club, social projects, the sports city, and the stadium, due to the lack of the principles of equal opportunities and the absence of justice," the club's statement read, as per KingFut.

"A board meeting will be held at the end of the season to consider the future of the club."

In January, Al-Shamsi threatened to stop funding the club after claiming that his side were subjected to constant suppression after Al Ahly were entered into the CAF Champions League even though Pyramids finished the 2021/22 season in second place behind Zamalek.
