Why Saile Is Keeping Caleb On The Bench

Why Saile Is Keeping Caleb On The Bench

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane has explained how a changed role for Christian Saile Basomboli is helping them create chances.

Basomboli has been a go-to striker for Chiefs since he was signed in January, with Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana playing second fiddle to the Congolese forward.

Zwane explained what the former Nchanga Rangers striker brings to their attack, with his pace, alongside Ashley Du Preez, allowing Amakhosi to press high and force the opposition to make mistakes.

"Look, Christian is one forceful player, you know he'll always put the opposition defenders under pressure all the time, especially when he has the ball, he's not afraid of taking people on," Zwane said in a press conference following their 2-1 win over Stellenbosch.

"(Against Stellenbosch) he was not at his best when you look at the turnovers that we had, he could have given us that advantage. At one stage we had about four v two about four, five times, where (we had) those break attacks.

"We were not sharp in terms of decision-making you know, get the ball in the right areas, the player that can be able to get the opportunity," he said.

'Mangethe' went on and explained that he switched Basomboli's position from being a target man from his former club Rangers, to playing as a number ten, "in the pockets" to "confuse" the opposition and that is how they have been creating chances.

"When you look at him, he's one positive player, he never stops running and when it comes to pressing, sometimes he finds himself in wrong areas when we're defending," he went on.

"Why? Because he's more of an offensive player, if you remember where he comes from, he was more of a target man. So with us we're playing with strikers that can become number tens, at some point we wanted to drop him into the pockets, so that we cause a little bit of confusion.

"And this is how we actually create a lot of chances, it's just that we don't take them," he added.
