How Sundowns Can Win The League This Weekend

Mamelodi Sundowns will be on CAF Champions League duty this weekend, but they could still win the DSTV Premiership title by the end of Saturday, without kicking a ball domestically.

Sundowns have a 20-point gap at the top of the standings after 23 matches and a lot will depend on what happens with second-placed SuperSport United, who take on Chippa United away from home on Saturday evening.

It's quite clear that Sundowns will win the league for a sixth consecutive season, but a SuperSport draw or loss would ensure that the reigning champions clinch it with seven matches to spare. SuperSport have also played 23 matches, and their away record in 2023 suggests that Sundowns could be celebrating yet another title.

Since the start of 2023, Matsatsantsa have only won one away match, against Cape Town City. Since that victory against the Citizens on January 3, Gavin Hunt's men have lost on the road to Golden Arrows, Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, while they have drawn against Swallows and Royal AM.

This is not a good record away from home in the second half of the campaign for Hunt's side and this should give Chippa reason to believe that they can get something out of the game and hand Sundowns the title as early as the first weekend of April.

The Chilli Boys are in 13th place, just five points ahead of bottom of the table side Marumo Gallants, so getting points against SuperSport would enhance their chances of avoiding relegation.
