Sundowns' Zwane & Dlamini Win R1m At SA Sports Awards

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies goalkeeper Andile Dlamini was named the SA Sports Star of the Year, while Themba Zwane won the People’s Choice Award.

Mamelodi Sundowns men's playmaker Themba Zwane and Mamelodi Sundowns ladies shot-stopper Andile Dlamini won big at the recent SA Sports Awards.

What's the story?

Themba Zwane and Andile Dlamini were the major winners at the 16th annual SA Sports Awards held at Sun City. 

The Sundowns affiliated duo won a combined sum of R1 million in prize money on the night, and were also congratulated by SAFA for their respective accolades.

Zwane Dlamini win big

Nominated alongside pro golfer Ashleigh Buhai and swimmer Matthew Sates, Sundowns Ladies and Banyana Banyana goalkeeper walked away with the SA Sports Star Of The Year award. 

After a stellar season with Masandawana and making history with Banyana as AFCON winners, 2022 was certainly one to remember for Dlamini, who earned herself a healthy prize money of R500 000.

Dlamini was reduced to tears upon receiving the SA Sports Award and her hefty prize and thanked Masandawana for paving a solid path for women in football.

Themba Zwane, who wasn't able to attend the awards in Sun City due to his national team commitments in Liberia, received that People's Choice Award. 

Shikabala received more votes that Proteas Men's Cricketer Kagiso Rabada, Olympic Swimming gold medalist Tatyana Schoenmaker, Proteas Women's Cricket Ayabonga Khaka and fellow baller, Banyana Banyana Sassuolo star Refiloe Jane. 

"The South African Football Association (SAFA) wishes to congratulate Banyana Banyana goalkeeper Andile Dlamini and Bafana Bafana midfielder Themba Zwane after they walked away with top accolades at the 16th Annual South African Sports Awards this weekend," they said in a statement.

"The two players have been in devastating form for both club and country and deserve the recognition they received at the 16th Annual South African Sports Awards," added SAFA who send their heartfelt congratulations to both stars.
