Chiefs And Khune Set For Crunch Talks

Chiefs And Khune Set For Crunch Talks

It's become traditional at Kaizer Chiefs for the club's hierarchy to drag contract talks, and the Siya crew understands it's now veteran Itumeleng Khune's turn.

The Amakhosi shot-stopper is in the final months of his initial agreement and if the two parties do not reach a consensus soon, the former Bafana Bafana number one could be a free agent come June 30.

According to high-ranking insiders at the club, Khune is expected to meet with management this month to open discussions around his future.

If it is not the player himself in person, then his representatives will stand in on his behalf to map a way forward.

Chiefs announced at the end of the 2020/21 season that the Ventersdorp-born star had signed a new two-year deal following a player exodus at Naturena with several changes being undertaken at the club, including the appointment of a sporting director.

Kaizer Motaung Jnr was hired in the role alongside Molefi Ntseki as the head of scouting and development, while Bobby Motaung appeared to take a step back.

These changes have effectively seen Chiefs trim down the average age of the squad in their recruitment policy, and with Khune turning 36 in three months' time, there are questions being asked about his longevity.

Siya sources expect these issues to be raised in a meeting that has been set up for the coming days, along with the fact that the goalkeeper is one of the high earners at the Soweto giants from a salary bracket point of view.
