Manchester City kept the pressure on Premier League leaders Arsenal after defeating Newcastle United 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Premier League

Result: Manchester City 2-0 Newcastle United

Date: 04 March 2022

Venue: Etihad

Citizens manager Pep Guardiola recalled Erling Haaland, Jack Grealish and Ilkay Gündogan after the FA Cup win in midweek, while the Magpies were boosted by the return of first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Gundogan should have put the home side ahead inside the first minute after being picked out by Grealish's inviting cross, but the German midfielder headed over the crossbar with only Pope to beat from six yards out.

The Citizens got the breakthrough in the 15th minute as Phil Foden weaved his way into the box before seeing his shot deflect in off Sven Botman, leaving Pope helpless on the line.

That was also Foden's 50th Premier League goal, with the midfielder becoming the youngest player to reach that figure for the Manchester outfit at the age of 22 years and 280 days.

Newcastle could have got themselves back on level terms seven minutes before the break when Kieran Trippier's knockdown found Callum Wilson, who scuffed his attempted volley from 12 yards.

The visitors looked livelier on the ball in the second half as they pushed for an equaliser, but they were finding it tough to carve out chances at Ederon's goal.

Coach Eddie Howe responded with three changes, as Alan Saint-Maximin, Joe Wilock and Aleksander Isak replaced Anthony Gordon, Sean Longstaff and Callum Willson for the final 30 minutes while Bernard Silva replaced Kevin de Bruyne.

Silva would go on to make an immediate impact as the Portuguese attacker collected a pass from Erling Haaland before finding the bottom corner from the edge of the box on 67 minutes.

City had a chance to bag a third goal late in the second half, but Pope produced a fine save to keep out Foden's close range strike as the encounter 2-0 to the home side.
