Man Utd Legend Causes Stir With 'Reaction' To Greenwood News

Man Utd Legend Causes Stir With 'Reaction' To Greenwood News

A Manchester United legend has received heavy backlash following his apparent reaction to the news that Mason Greenwood has been cleared of all criminal charges by a court.

Official: Man Utd Star Announces Retirement From France

On Thursday, the Greater Manchester Police announced that the charges of rape, coercive behaviour and abuse against Greenwood had been discontinued after he was initially set to stand trial in November this year.

The 21-year-old has not played football since his arrest in January last year, after which the Red Devils suspended him until further notice amid the allegations.

In the wake of the news, a former prosecutor with the Crown Prosecution Service, Nazir Afzal, called Greenwood an "innocent man" on Twitter and reminded his followers that those accused are "innocent until proven guilty".

According to the Daily Mirror, ex-United captain Gary Neville liked one of Afzal's tweets, for which he received widespread backlash online before attempting to clear matters up with posts of his own.

"I liked a tweet relating to the Mason Greenwood news this afternoon from Nazir Afzal," he wrote on Twitter.

"This like is being misinterpreted. It was a clumsy like as I obviously condemn any violence against women."

Greenwood has a contract with the Red Devils until 2025, but is believed to have not trained since his arrest at the start of 2022.

United have stated that an internal investigation will be launched after the charges were dropped, while the striker has issued a statement to say he is "relieved".
