After scoring in Paris Saint-Germain's Ligue 1 win on Wednesday night, Lionel Messi surpassed long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo to become the footballer with the most goals while playing in Europe's top five leagues.

Messi Reveals Surprise Toughest Clash At World Cup

The Argentine was on target for the French giants in their action-packed 3-1 away victory over Montpellier in Ligue 1.

Kylian Mbappe missed two penalties early in the first half before going off injured, while PSG were also forced to substitute Sergio Ramos before the break, just weeks before the team's UEFA Champions League round of 16 first-leg tie against Bayern Munich.

According to PSG Talk, Messi scored the 697th goal of his career in the match, which means no player in history has struck more than the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner while playing in Europe's top five divisions.

The 35-year-old was previously tied with Ronaldo, who recently completed a surprise switch to Al Nassr in the Middle East following his free-agent exit from Manchester United.

Messi: Why I Celebrated In Front Of Van Gaal

Messi has contributed to 28 goals in 23 matches this season so far for PSG, who are five points clear of second-place Olympique Marseille in Ligue 1.
