FIFA President Set To Make Massive Change To World Cup?

FIFA President Set To Make Massive Change To World Cup?

Gianni Infantino

Reports suggest that FIFA president Gianni Infantino wants to stop making the FIFA World Cup every four years as he looks to make another major change to the competition.

As per the Daily Mail, the Swiss executive has been so impressed with the commercial success of the tournament in Qatar that he now wants to have the global showpiece take place every three years.

Last week, Infantino announced a revised FIFA Club World Cup, and despite the lack of support from football's stakeholders, the FIFA president now looks set to push for another massive decision.

The same report suggests that world football's governing body made a record £6.2 billion (R130 billion) in commercial revenue from the World Cup in Qatar despite the tournament being held in the middle of the campaign.

Any potential time frame change for the global spectacle would only happen after the 2030 World Cup, though, with talks about the two forthcoming tournaments set to conclude.

Infantino has made it clear he wishes to complete three full terms as head of FIFA, which would see him stay on as president until 2031, possibly opening the door for his three-year World Cup wish to come true.

Any tenure that long will, however, need the backing of all the world's football federations, and while COMNEBOL and UEFA have objected to previous suggestions of changes to the World Cup, CAF and AFC seem to be on board.

While nothing can be formalised just yet, there have been suggestions that talks have already begun about making the possible switch.

As it stands, the next World Cup will have an extra 16 teams as it expands to 48 nations.
