Morocco Protest To FIFA After Semi-Final Loss To France

The Morocco football federation (FMRF) have lodged a complaint to world governing body FIFA over the referee's performance in their World Cup semi-final defeat to France.

The Atlas Lions were unable to advance to the World Cup final after losing 2-0 to the defending champions on Wednesday night.

FMRF were not happy with happy with some of the decisions in the defeat, which included the failure to award a penalty in the first half when Theo Hernandez appeared to have brought down Sofiane Boufal, who was instead booked for diving.

"The FMRF has written to the relevant body to review the refereeing decisions that deprived the Moroccan team of two penalties that were indisputable in the view of several refereeing specialists," the FMRF said in a statement, as BBC Sport.

"The FMRF was equally astonished that the video assistant referee (VAR) did not react to these situations."

Former England and Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand felt the Moroccans should have been awarded a penalty in the first half.

"I thought it was a penalty on Sofiane Boufal, rather than a foul by him," the former Manchester United player, working as a television pundit, said.
