He was thought to be the future of the national team, however, Lebo Mothiba has not featured for Bafana Bafana in three years and now his exile from the national team could soon come to an end if the words of Hugo Broos are anything to go by.

17 November 2019 was the last time the 26-year-old donned the national team jersey.

Since then, the striker has battled with a persistent knee injury, which saw him loaned out from his mother club Racing Strasbourg to Troyes halfway through the 2021/22 French topflight season.

But Mothiba is back, and he is back among the goals in Ligue 1.

In seven appearances this campaign, the former Lille OSC man has managed two goals, which has led to questions over his return to the national team.

"For Mothiba it's simple, he's [been] since two weeks with the team and he's just playing half an hour and 15 minutes or something like that. Is that a standard to take a player? I don't know, I don't think so. You need to give one performance after the other, he was injured, was a long time and he didn't play for [Troyes] last year, so let's see what happens," Broos told journalists.

The Belgian coach will have to make do without the trio of Lyle Foster, Thibang Phete and Mihlali Mayambela, who have all been ruled out through late injuries.

Bafana Bafana take on Mozambique at 20:30 at the Mbombela Stadium on Thursday evening.
