Brazil squad

With Brazil's star-studded 2022 FIFA World Cup squad having been officially announced on Monday, here are seven players who did not make the final cut, including four who are based in the Premier League.

Following the announcement of the Selecao squad heading to Qatar on Monday, many regard this as arguably as Brazil's strongest World Cup side since they last won the prestigious tournament in 2002.

High-profile names such as Neymar, Vinicius Junior and Gabriel Jesus were included in head coach Tite's selection, as was Manchester United trio Fred, Antony and Casemiro.

Due to the competition being held mid-season, national team coaches are able to name 26-man squads for the World Cup in the Middle East, but some experienced Brazil internationals still missed out when Tite made his announcement.

Below are seven players who were left out of Brazil's World Cup squad:

There was no space for 55-time Selecao star Roberto Firmino, who has previously represented the South American at three major tournaments – the 2018 World Cup, and at the 2015, 2019 and 2021 Copa America.

Liverpool's striker, who has scored eight goals for the Reds since the start of the 2022/23 campaign so far, was called up to Brazil's September friendlies against Ghana and Tunisia, but was an unused substitute in both encounters.

His former club colleague Philippe Coutinho will miss the trip to Qatar, but likely because he is currently suffering from an injury. The 69-time Brazil international's date of return is unknown, according to Transfermarkt.

Meanwhile, Arsenal defender, Roma centre-back Roger Ibanez and Nottingham Forest left-back Renan Lodi were all overlooked, with Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha and Flamengo striker Gabriel Barbosa also not included.
