'What Separates Ronaldo From Lionel Messi Is...'

Cristiano Ronaldo

With Cristiano Ronaldo having just netted the 700th club goal of his career, many regard the Portuguese superstar as better than Lionel Messi, including a British football legend, who recently explained his thoughts on the matter.

Barcelona Confirm Big Lionel Messi Decision

On Sunday night against Everton, Ronaldo started on the bench for the sixth consecutive Premier League game under Erik ten Hag.

The Red Devils fell behind early in the match courtesy of a spectacular long-range strike from Alex Iwobi, but restored parity when Antony found the back of the net for the third league game running 10 minutes later.

However, the man who assisted United's equaliser, Anthony Martial, was substituted off in the 29th minute for Ronaldo, with the Frenchman having struggled to recover from an injury he sustained while warming up ahead of the fixture.

It was the five-time Ballon d'Or winner who would prove the match-winner as he slotted the ball past Jordan Pickford just before half-time to help United secure their fifth victory in their past six league games.

Speaking on beIN Sports' coverage of the tie, Andy Gray examined the 37-year-old's remarkable goalscoring feat and explained why he considers the Portuguese superstar to be better than Messi.

"See that, for me, is what separates him from Messi," Gray said.

"When people say 'Who has been the best player in the world?' I think that separates him from Messi, in my opinion, that he's done it [at Real Madrid, Manchester United and Juventus].

"Three different countries, three different types of football, three different challenges – and he's risen to every one of them, on a personal level."

Arsenal Sink Liverpool To Reclaim Top Spot

The goal at Goodison Park was Ronaldo's 144th for the Mancunians, having found the back of the net 450 times for Real Madrid and 101 times for Juventus.
