Although the awarding of the World Cup to Qatar has been met with widespread disapproval due to the country's poor human rights record, Beckham accepted a deal to become an ambassador for the nation's campaign ahead of and during the tournament.

As perhaps expected, the ex-England captain has been criticised for his involvement. His spokesperson, however, has insisted Beckham has, for a long time, preached about the power the beautiful game can have on people.

According to the Daily Mirror, the former Real Madrid No. 23 has already pocketed more than £10 million (R199 million) since agreeing to Qatar's offer, adding to the many millions he earned during his career as a footballer.

It is believed that, in 2022, Beckham has garnered a net worth of a staggering £398 million (R7.9 billion) since becoming a global icon, with the legendary United No. 7 thought of among the sport's most marketable players.

Today, Beckham is a co-owner of MLS franchise Inter Miami in the US, a club coached by his former England and United teammate Phil Neville.

During his playing career, Beckham played for iconic clubs such as the Red Devils, Real, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, while he represented LA Galaxy on 124 occasions during his spell in North America.
