Messi Surpasses Ronaldo With Winner Against Lyon
International football returns for the next two weeks to mark the first break of the 2022/23 European season, a month and a half into what has already been a thrilling campaign.
Erling Haaland might have started the calendar year with injury and fitness issues while still in Germany with Borussia Dortmund, but he has bounced back with terrific goalscoring form since joining Manchester City in the recent transfer window.
The Norwegian has struck on 14 occasions in just 10 appearances so far for the Citizens, making him the fifth best club scorer in Europe's top five divisions in 2022, two goals ahead of Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane.
Haaland is also closing in on RB Leipzig secondary striker Christopher Nkunku and Real Madrid captain Karim Benzema, whose recent injury has given a chance to Lewandowski and Kylian Mbappe to surpass his tally so far this year.
Here are the 10 top scorers in 2022:
1. Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain) – 34 goals
2. Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich/Barcelona) – 31 goals
3. Karim Benzema (Real Madrid) – 27 goals
4. Christopher Nkunku (RB Leipzig) – 26 goals
5. Erling Haaland (Borussia Dortmund/Manchester City) – 24 goals
6. Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur) – 22 goals
7. Neymar (Paris Saint-Germain) – 21 goals
8. Ciro Immobile (Lazio) – 21 goals
9. Moussa Dembele (Olympique Lyon) – 20 goals
10. Wissam Ben Yedder (Monaco) – 20 goals
Although he has been in fine form since the new season started, Lionel Messi still has a way to go if he is to climb into the top 10, having scored just 11 club goals in 2022, tied with Cristiano Ronaldo.
