14 SA Stars Who Played In The Premier League

After Percy Tau was recalled by Brighton Hove Albion, the former Mamelodi Sundowns winger is set to become the 15th South African star to play in the English Premier League.

Click through the gallery above to see all South Africans who have played in the PL, and how many appearances they have made, according to Transfermarkt.

The 26-year-old already joined Brighton in 2018 from Masandawana but was not able to be registered by his English club due to work permit restrictions.

However, new regulations following Brexit will now allow his mother club to register him for the second half of the 2020/21 Premier League campaign.

As a consequence, Brighton recalled Tau from his stint at RSC Anderlecht, which was his third loan spell away from the club since moving to England.

Tau could now become the 15th South African to feature in the English top flight, following in the footsteps of SA legends such as Steven Pienaar, Benni McCarthy, Quinton Fortune and Lucas Radebe – among others.

Pienaar has been Mzansi's most-capped player in the Premier League since it's establishment in 1992. The winger featured 214 times for Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland.

McCarthy, meanwhile, has been SA's most prolific player in the Premier League, having scored 37 times during his time at Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United, with Tokelo Rantie being the latest South African to feature in England during his time at AFC Bournemouth between 2013 and 2016.

Players such as Andrew Surman (AFC Borunemouth, Norwich City and Wolverhamton Wanderers) and and Mark Stein (Chelsea) do not appear on the list because they are widely considered as English footballers despite being born in South Africa.

Bongani Khumalo spent four years at Tottenham Hotspur but never made a Premier League appearance, while Johannesburg-born Panagiotis Retsos, who represents Greece at international level, was on loan at Sheffield United without making a league appearance.

Five SA youngsters have been registered by different Premier League clubs this campaign, but are yet to make their official debuts, with Kgagelo Chauke (Southampton) and Nikola Tavares (Crystal Palace) coming the closest after having been named on the bench in recent times.
