While the spotlight has been firmly focused on Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, Tendai Ndoro, "CBD" etc., there has been a rocket going under the radar in the form of Gavin Hunt and Bidvest Wits. They are experiencing their most stellar season to date, and it all hangs by a thread though as the end nears… Tonight could be the night it all comes crashing down, or it could be the beginning of history in the making…
Bidvest Wits have never won the PSL before, but they have a pretty well-equipped army this time around. With Andre Arendse and Gavin Hunt being the brains behind the operation, and with the Clever Boys only six points off the Brazilians with five games left to play, anything is possible.
Supporters Club caught up with Wits supporter and university student David Mdwaba to find out just how possible it is that his team could still win the league…
"Oh, it's very possible," he said.
"I have lived here for a long time and I never thought I would see the day my team came this close to getting it.
"But, it could all come crashing down tonight... If we draw or lose to Stuart Baxter's SuperSport United, then Sundowns pretty much have the title…"
Wits are certainly on the back foot as they have to make up points, and they do not have an easy run-in – their remaining fixtures include games against SuperSport, Mpumalanga Black Aces, and Sundowns – so it's do or die for the Clever Boys.
"I can imagine that Hunt had a sleepless night last night," he continued.
"But hey, if anyone can do it, it's him. Let's not forget that this is the man who won the title three times in a row with SuperSport. I'm sure people laughed at that prospect before it happened.
"Anyway, tonight, Gavin Hunt must win or kiss the league goodbye."
What do you think the score between Wits and Matsatsantsa will be tonight? Is the title race as good as over, or is there still something in it?
